Chocolate retail sales were $17 billion in 2009, up 3% from 2008, according to a new report from Packaged Facts in Rockville, Md.
"Chocolate's recession resilience may be due to its 'lipstick factor,' " wrote Curtis Vreeland, analyst for Packaged Facts, in his report. Economists have long noted that lipstick, with a relatively low price, continues to sell during downturns because it cheers women up. "Eating chocolate may have the same effect," Vreeland wrote.
